Finding a Movie Script

Want to create a movie, but don't have a script? You don't have to write it yourself. Learn where you can find scripts that you can use.

We all want to walk down the red carpet, many as famous actors, but others want to stand out for their movie-making abilities. Wouldn't it be nice to see your movie on the big screen in Hollywood? While that may not happen tomorrow, you can create your own independent movies.

Creating an independent movie can be a fun and exciting venture. There are some prerequisites that you have to address before you even begin shooting your film. First of all, you need to buy a quality digital camcorder. Next, you need to find actors or just your best friends to act in it. And, finally, you definitely need a quality script.

Where do you find movie scripts for independent films? Well, the obvious answer is that you can write it yourself. If you’ve got an idea, flesh it out, and turn it into a script. There are many screenwriting software programs out there, including Final Draft, Movie Magic and many, many others, to help you create your script.

Writing your own screenplay will also save you money, and you won’t have to worry about paying royalties to a third-party. You are the sole owner on the entire work so any profits that you make will be yours.

Buy a Movie Script from a Screenwriter

If you’re not, however, an adept screenwriter, you can purchase scripts to use to make your independent film. If you do plan on buying a script, you should probably have an attorney draw you up a contract. You will have to ensure that you are not infringing on the rights of the script’s owner. You will also have to pay for the script up-front and possibly pay the screenwriter royalties. With these things in mind, it’s probably best to have someone who can offer you sound legal advice.

Yet, if you are planning on purchasing a script, you have plenty of options for finding scripts. Plus, buying scripts from unknown screenwriters may give you a wider set of options, and you will be helping the screenwriter become known since most don’t have agents yet. Here are just a few of the websites that offer screenplays for sale:

Of course, there are many others out there, but these are good places to start. Many screenwriters just want to see their script made into a movie no matter what. So, they are willing to make little or no money just to make that happen.

Deciding on a Screenplay

Before you decide on a screenplay, think of the type of movie that you would like to make. What genre movie do you want to make? Are you interested in adding special effects to your movie? How many actors are you going to need? Thinking about these questions beforehand will also help you come up with a budget, an actor schedule, etc.

Re-watch your favorite movies, and consider how these movies were made and what type of script they used. Knowing for what you are looking for will help you narrow down your screenplay search.

Once you find your script, have fun with it. Read the dialogue and really get a feel for what its saying. Then start scoping out your local environment to see which types of setting will work best for your dialogue. Now, you can grab your actors and get filming!

I have never met a screenwriter who wants his or her script made so badly that he or she will accept handing it over to a filmmaker for use without recompense. And I don't intend to meet one that does. Interesting comment in the article. Otherwise, rather motivational comments and some good advice.
